I went to California in February On My Own and had the best holiday of my life, without a doubt! I hired a Mustang in San Diego, drove it north up the highway to LA, hung out in a bar for a bit, met some folks who seemed genuinely pleased to meet me – being British is a serious asset in the ‘States…
I’d been fiddling with the SatNav while I was trying to work out a route to a theatre from my car in the pouring rain just before I was due to drive back to San Diego airport (from LA) and of course, I didn’t change the fucking transport method back to car before I set off.
Luckily… my flight was at 6am and I’d chosen to skimp on the hotel bills and leave LA at midnight, drive to the car hire depot or somewhere close, have a kip in the car…
Two hours later (2am) I was still in LA and driving around some pretty nasty looking districts and I realised my mistake. I was angry for about 10 seconds and then saw the funny side. The elation I felt was so fantastic that I forgot all about that stupid oversight that cost me two hours, set it it to car and was in San Diego for 5am for breakfast, car drop, bag drop and on the plane, laughing all the way. It could’ve been a catastrophe but it was just colour, it was just me.
I know no-one reads this but I feel an apology is due. I had this Idea when I had plenty of time on my hands and, I thought, an awesome vehicle for writing about the things that I like (guns) and the things I like doing (fucking). Guess what? Constantly searching for more of the latter… I got back with an ex girlfriend and beautiful as she is. I didn’t have any time to think, couldn’t crystallise thoughts, in the end I couldn’t even remember what is was that actually liked… I’m writing as if it’s past tense but I broke up with her last night and it still seems surreal. I’ve never broken up with anyone for the right reasons before. And while I feel relieved and excited in some ways, I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing.
Anyway, I’m sat here on my my own philosophising with myself and thought I’d put something here – for the record. I think I’m going on holiday on my own again – fuck yeah!
